See Dolly Parton and Pentatonix Team Up for Smooth ‘Jolene’
By Fizz on September 16, 2016
Dolly Parton’s been giving her mournful hit “Jolene” the pop treatment lately: first, a colorful duet with Katy Perry at last spring’s ACM Awards, and now, an a cappella version alongside harmonious quintet Pentatonix. Recorded in Nashville to herald the deluxe edition of her most recent LP, Pure & Simple, available at Cracker Barrel stores nationwide, Pentatonix (the biscuit-loving brand’s first “Spotlight Artist”) lend some ominous vocals – and a little beat-boxing, naturally – to the classic track.
This isn’t the first time Parton has reinvented “Jolene” in an a cappella format – she joined Straight No Chaser for a thumping rendition on their 2013 LP Under the Influence, and the song itself has been covered by everyone from the White Stripes to Miley Cyrus. The deluxe edition of Pure & Simple includes a live version recorded at U.K.’s Glastonbury. Parton’s set at the festival in 2014 was a massive crowd favorite that even included a guest appearance from Richie Sambora.
Parton also recently sat down to chat withKelsea Ballerini, Cam, RaeLynn and Lauren Alaina for Cracker Barrel’s Front Porch series. The Country Music Hall of Fame member is currently on tour in support of Pure & Simple, performing a string of dates in Canada.
