Extreme cold is coming to Denver this weekend and into next week as you’ve probably heard. In a perfect world you would just stay inside curled up with a good movie, nice and warm, but if you do have to go out the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has some tips for staying safe…

CDOT has published a list of items that travelers should keep in the trunk of their vehicle to make winter driving safer…

Essential items –

  • Sturdy scraper/snow brush/snow shovel to clear snow
  • Flashlight with extra batteries or crank-powered flashlight
  • Blanket or sleeping bag
  • Gallon jug of water
  • First aid kit and essential medications
  • Tire chains and tow strap
  • Jumper cables
  • Flares/reflectors to signal for help and warn other motorists

Secondary items –

  • Extra set of clothes, including coat, hat, mittens, boots, etc.
  • Chemical hand warmers
