The National Park Service announced Thursday (Feb 15) that Amache National Historic Site in southeastern Colorado is officially America’s newest national park.

Amache is noteworthy as a former site of Japanese American incarceration during World War II, one of 10 camps of that nature spread around the country. According to the National Park Service, Amache housed 7,310 incarcerated people at its peak and more than 10,000 people from 1942 to 1945, two-thirds of whom were citizens of the United States.

Today the site consists of a historic cemetery, a monument, concrete building foundations, a road network and several reconstructed and restored structures from the World War II era including a barrack, recreation hall, guard tower and water tank.
